Spink auction 335, lot 122

This specimen was lot 122 in Spink auction 335 (New York, June 2017), where it sold for $24,000. The catalog description noted,

"Norway. Christian V (1670 - 1699). Speciedaler, 1675 PG. Christiania, Peter Gruner, mint official. Laureate, draped bust right, rev. Crowned Arms - crowned lion rampant left with halberd over cross. Rare. Faint haymarking. Pleasing pearly gray tone. PCGS Au 53."

This scarce type was struck 1674-80. A similar specie daler (KM 109), struck 1671-74, is lumped in by Davenport with Dav-3656. Quarter and double specie dalers were also struck in 1675.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.78 g, 0.875 fine silver, 43 mm diameter.
