Heritage sale 3064, lot 31437
Norway H3064-31437r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31437 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $13,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Frederik III Speciedaler 1654-FG AU58 NGC. Exceptional quality for the issue, displaying an extremely bold portrait of Frederik III in the obverse centers and desirable light brownish tone throughout that emits attractive iridescent hues when viewed at an angle beneath a light. Closer inspection yields only trivial amounts of handling in the fields that defines the graded and a few instances of minor strike doubling, most notably at the legends. A very rare coin in any state, but especially desirable as fine as the present. Expect strong competition for this one! From the Jamestown Collection." This daler was struck for Norway by Frederick III, king of Denmark 1648-70. It was struck 1653-56 and is rare. The bust looks more like Dav-3601 (1657-58) than the SCWC's photo of Dav-3595.

Recorded mintage: 23,000.

Specification: 28.78 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-3595; KM 48var., Ahlstrom-70.
