Künker sale 400, lot 576

This specimen was lot 576 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €17,000 (about US$22,054 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NORWEGEN, KÖNIGREICH, Frederik III. 1648-1670. 1/2 Dukat o. J. (1669), Christiania. 1.67 g. Münzmeister Frederik Grüner. FRID · 3 · D · G · - D · N · V · G · REX Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz//DOMINUS - PROVIDEBIT Ovales Wappen (Gekrönter Löwe mit gebogener Hellebarde) auf Kreuz, oben Krone, unten Münzmeisterzeichen Kleeblatt. Ahlström 7 (R); Fr-5; Thesen 11. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Min. gewellt, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung Johan Christian Holm. Exemplar der Auktion Oslo Mynthandel 19, Oslo 1987, Nr. 287 A (zuvor erworben von Johan Christian Holm) und der Sammlung Per E. Rui. (kingdom of Norway, Frederick III, 1648-70, undated half ducat, circa 1669, Christiania (Oslo) mint. Obverse: armored and laureate bust right; reverse: oval arms with a crowned lion holding a halberd over a cross, crown above. Extremely rare, slightly wavy, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Norway was a province of perpetually bankrupt Denmark in the seventeenth century and her gold coinage is very scanty.
