Newfoundland 1940-C 5 cents
This specimen was part of lot 26816 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $246.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "Newfoundland. Lot of Five Mint State Coins, Cent 1919-C, 5 Cents 1940-C, 5 Cents 1945-C, (two pieces), 25 Cents 1917-C, an attractive grouping." This specimen is a better date of a type struck in Ottawa, Canada, for the colony of Newfoundland 1938-43. Later issues for George VI were 0.800 fine silver (KM 19a). Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.
Recorded mintage: 200,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 1.16 g, 0.925 fine silver, .035 troy oz ASW, 15.67 mm diameter, reeded edge.
