Newfoundland 1938 5 cents
The first specimen was lot 71231 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 5 Cents, 1938. Ottawa Mint. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Carefully preserved with soft golden color in the centers and instances of deeper tone around portions of the designs." The second specimen was lot 51169 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[2] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 5 Cents, 1938. London Mint. George VI. PCGS SPECIMEN-64. RARE as a specimen striking, this near-Gem glistens with radiant brilliance and an exceptionally alluring mirror sheen imparted unto the surfaces. Meanwhile, some subtle toning augments its appeal that much more." This type was struck in London in 1938 and at Ottawa in 1940-43. This date is scarce in nice condition. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased.
