Newfoundland 1940 10 cents
This specimen was lot 70364 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 10 Cents, 1940. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. Bold and flashy satiny surfaces with areas of tangerine toning. A lovely example with good eye appeal." It is a fairly common date of a type struck 1938-44. it has the same design as the ten cent pieces of 1945-47 but is 0.925 fine silver. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.
