Newfoundland SB120-22411r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22411 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 5 Cents, 1912. London Mint. PCGS MS-66. A tiny, gem quality piece with full cartwheel luster and a gorgeous thick band of multicolored peripheral toning." This specimen is a common date of a type struck in Ottawa, Canada, for the colony of Newfoundland 1912, 1917, 1919 and 1929. Canada debased her five cent pieces from .925 to 0.800 fine silver in 1920 but Newfoundland did not follow suit until 1944. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.

Recorded mintage: 300,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 1.18 g, 0.925 fine silver, 15.6 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-13.
