Newfoundland 1882-H 50 cents
This specimen was lot 42161 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 50 Cents, 1882-H. PCGS EF-45 Secure Holder. High end for the assigned grade, the only thing missing is luster." This type was struck at Heaton for Newfoundland in limited numbers 1872, 1876 and 1882 and is fairly available in grades up to fine. This date is the commonest of the three. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.
Recorded mintage: 100,000.
Specification: 11.78 g, 0.925 fine silver, .350 troy oz ASW, 32 mm diameter.
