This specimen is from a type struck in London and Birmingham for the colony of Newfoundland 1865, 1872-76, 1880, 1885-90, 1894-96. Large cents were struck until 1936. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.
Recorded mintage: 200,000, a slightly better date.
Specification: 5.67 g, bronze, 25.3 mm diameter.
