New Zealand 1953 6 pence
This specimen was lot 3875 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $113.05. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND: Elizabeth II, 1952-, sixpence, 1953, Huia bird, beautiful multicolored tone, a superb example! NGC graded MS67." The copper-nickel issues of Elizabeth II are divided into "no shoulder fold" (1953-55, shown here) and "with shoulder fold" (1956-65). In a few cases, "no shoulder fold" dies were used in error in 1956 and 1957, creating rarities; otherwise, most dates are common. The proofs are more available than the business strikes. The denomination was retired in 1965.
Recorded mintage: 1,200,000 plus 7,000 proofs.
Specification: 2.82 g, copper-nickel, 19.3 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-26.1.
