Steve Album sale 54, lot 3402

This specimen was lot 3402 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND: AE penny token, 1874, United Service Hotel, Auckland, UNITED SERVICE in curved line, brown, XF." Another version exists (KM Tn66) with the "UNITED SERVICE" in a straight line instead of curved. The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin."
