Sincona sale 87, lot 2817

This specimen was lot 2817 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 60 CHF (about US$81 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEUSEELAND Tokens, Wellington. 1/2 Penny o. J., Kirkaldie & Stains. General drapers and outfitters. Fast FDC. (New Zealand, undated half penny token, Wellington, Kirkaldie & Stains. About uncirculated.)"

The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin." Most were one penny tokens; half penny tokens are unusual
