Sincona sale 64, lot 3455

This specimen was lot 3455 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$564 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Neuenburg/Neuchâtel | Fürsten von Neuchâtel. Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1786-1797. 56 Kreuzer 1795, Neuchâtel. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleine Schrötlingsfehler. (principality of Neuchatel, Frederick William II, 1786-97, fifty-six kreuzer of 1795, Neuchatel mint. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Minor flan flaws.)"

The canton of Neuchâtel issued a variety of coins during the eighteenth century while the county was under Prussian administration. This scarce type was accompanied by a 28 kreuzer (KM 50). Four kreuzer = one batzen and 56 kreuzer = 14 batzen = half gulden. In the nineteenth century, forty batzen = four franken = one thaler.
