This specimen was lot 1148 in Goldberg sale 46 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description noted, "Netherlands West Indies. 3 Gulden, 1794 (Utrecht). Crowned arms. Value flanking, large W (for West Indie) below. Reverse: Pallas Athene holding inverted spear with hat atop, and resting arm on upright book which sits upon ornate pedestal. One year type and very rare. Attractive light toning and evenly struck. NGC graded AU-58. The 3 Gulden was an outgrowth of the Ducaton, but being the same denomination as the standard Netherlands issues. The coin was issued for trade in the Caribbean, and to compete with the Spanish 8 Reales, and the British counterstamped or overstruck Spanish Reales. Provenance: Ex Irving Goodman Collection."

The only types listed for Netherlands West Indies are silver two stuivers, ¼ gulden, one gulden and the three gulden shown here. All are scarce but the three gulden is the most expensive.

Specification: 31.82 g, .920 fine silver, .941 troy oz ASW; this specimen: 31.48 grams.
