Netherlands East Indies 1907 1/10 gulden
This specimen was lot 21213 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. 1/10 Gulden, 1907. PCGS PROOF-65 Gold Shield. An impressive Gem Proof with surfaces that have been carefully preserved throughout, displaying virtually no signs of handling and a faint sheath of iridescent tone in the fields. VERY RARE as a Proof, this being one of only two graded by PCGS and NGC combined with no appearances showing up in archived auction records." This type was struck 1903-09 and is common. The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1900's, the Dutch had conquered the profitable parts and the empire was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. However, their founding of schools for the natives led to the rise of an educated elite eager for independence.
Recorded mintage: 14,000,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 1.25 g, 0.720 fine silver, 15 mm diameter.
