Netherlands East Indies 1906 1/10 gulden
This specimen was lot 24398 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. 1/10 Gulden, 1906. PCGS MS-67 Gold Shield. KM-309. The sole finest example of the date seen by PCGS, this superb Gem presents a great deal of lustrous brilliance along with some alluring russet toning as one approaches the peripheries. Incredibly blazing and attractive." This type was struck 1903-09 and is common. The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1900's, the Dutch had conquered the profitable parts and the empire was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. However, their founding of schools for the natives led to the rise of an educated elite eager for independence.
