Netherlands East Indies 1790 gulden KM-139
This specimen was lot 642 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,827 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PROVINCIALE MUNTEN - 1 Gulden 1790 over 1787, Silver, West-Friesland Staande Nederlandse maagd, jaartal in afsnede. Kz. generaliteitswapen tussen waarde I - GL. in cartouche VOC. In jaartal Arabische 1 en kromme 7; Klop E41 weerhaken Soumenep of Madura ster RRR. Uiterst zeldzame combinatie klop en overslag. Munt: Bijna zeer fraai. Klop: Zeer fraai +. NGC VF35 cs XF standard. (Netherlands East Indies, silver gulden of 1790, Westfriesland mint, 1790/87 overdate. Obverse: the Dutch maid stands, the date in the exergue; reverse: the arms of the Generality divides the value, "VOC" in cartouche. Arabic 1 and curved 7 in the date, with Madura Island counterstamp. Extremely rare, especially with the counterstamp. Host coin about very fine, counterstamp bold very fine, graded NGC VF35 cs XF standard.)
Guldens van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie met de klop weerhaken van Soumenep of de Madura ster hebben wij een enkele keer aangetroffen in veiling Schulman 30 van 8-10 nov. 2004, nr. 58 (ander jaar). (We have been able to locate just one other gulden of the Dutch East India Company with the Madura star countermark, this was in auction Schulman 30 of 8-10 nov. 2004, lot 58 (other date).)"
The United East India Company (VOC) had gulden struck at Utrecht (1786 and 1790), Westfriesland (1786-90), Zeeland (1791) and Gelderland (1786 and 1790) for trade with the Indies.
