This specimen was lot 3230 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $7,637.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. 10 Gulden, 1911. NGC PROOF-65 CAMEO. EXTREMELY RARE proof striking of this first year of issue for a four year type. Listed in Krause as having a mintage of a mere 8 pieces. Very attractive rose gold appearance with flashing proof surfaces beneath a light sheen of toning. No signs of handling or contact and as gem as the grade would imply. Tied with two other example in this numeric grade but being the only one with a cameo designation, two pieces graded one point finer. Ex: Stack's Sale of the Clifford T. Weihman Collection of Gold Coins of the World. October 18-20, 1951, Lot #428." This type, struck 1911-17, features the "mantled bust" of queen Wilhelmina. On her coronation in 1898, the regency ended and she assumed full powers of the throne. This bust was used on all the silver and gold denominations from the ten cents to the ten gulden. The Netherlands, remaining neutral during World War One, continued to issue gold.
