Netherlands 1885 ducat
This specimen was lot 33119 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $6,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands. Willem III gold Ducat 1885-B MS64+ NGC, Utrecht mint. Broadaxe privy. Extremely rare and elusive, as are all issues of this Trade Ducat type from the years 1872 to 1885, and in a wonderful state of preservation besides, on the cusp of gem with a full strike and flashy, satiny golden luster. A rare opportunity for the collector of Dutch coinage." The Netherlands was the last country to strike ducats on a regular basis. This type was struck 1814-1937, many of which were made in Russia, indistinguishable from Utrecht mint issues. Ducats were struck for William III in 1849 and 1872-85; only the 1849 is available.
Recorded mintage: 81,205.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold.
