Netherlands 1853 gulden
This specimen was lot 594 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €220 (about US$283 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN - WILLEM III 1849-1890. 1 Gulden. 1853 Hoofd naar rechts door J. P. Schouberg. Mmt. zwaard, mt. mercuriusstaf., Silver. NGC VF Details Cleaned. Bijna zeer fraai. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William III, 1849-90, one gulden of 1853, head right. Privy marks sword and Mercury's staff. Graded NGC VF DEtails Cleaned.)"
This type was struck 1850-67 in substantial numbers, tho it is scarce in nice condition. No one gulden coins were struck between 1867 and 1892. Curiously, while the half, one and 2½ gulden pieces were 0.945 fine silver, the five, ten and twenty-five cent issues were only 0.640 fine.
Recorded mintage: 652,035 including 1853/0 and 1853/1 overdates. A scarce date.
