Netherlands 1851 2-1/2 gulden
This specimen was lot 30232 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $3,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Willem III 2-1/2 Gulden 1851 MS66 NGC, Utrecht mint. Intricately defined and accompanied by dazzling luster, with original tone of mostly green, blue and gold hue that concentrates at the edges. A rare type in this near-pristine grade, and currently the finest example of the date graded by NGC." The specimen is an early date of a type struck at the Utrecht mint for the Netherlands 1849-74. Most of the dates are common; this one is slightly better. After the final issue of 1874, no 2½ gulden were issued until 1898. The 0.945 fine alloy seems to be unique to the Netherlands.
Recorded mintage: 3,647,493--a fairly common date.
Specification: 25 g, 0.945 fine silver, 37 mm diameter.
