The mint of the city of Middelburg (province of Zeeland) dates from the year 1366 and was supported by count William (Willem) V of Holland and Zeeland (1330-1389). Emblematic for the coins by this mint is the swimming lion and the Latin text LUCTOR ET EMERGO (I struggle and emerge) referring to the continuous battle of this province with the sea.
