Sincona sale 83, lot 3288

This specimen was lot 3288 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,874 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "NEPAL, Tribhuvana, Bir Bikram, 1968-2007 VS (1911-1950 AD). Ashraphi (Tola) 1989 VS (1932 AD), NGC MS65. Prachtvolle Erhaltung (Magnificent condition). Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar (Finest certified by NGC)." This issue of king Tribhuvana Bir Bikram (r. 1911-50) is listed for VS 1969, 1974-1991, 1998-2003 (common era 1912-46). No date is given a premium, more likely due to lack of interest than any variation in rarity. Nepal was and is an independent nation between India and Tibet but under the strong influence of the British raj. Some coins are dated using the Saka Era (SE) and others using the Bikram Samvat Era (VS).
