Sincona sale 83, lot 3285

This specimen was lot 3285 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$4,015 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "NEPAL, Tribhuvana, Bir Bikram, 1968-2007 VS (1911-1950 AD). Mohar 1986 VS (1929 AD), NGC MS67+. Prachtexemplar. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar (Cabinet piece, Finest certified by NGC)." This issue of king Tribhuvana Bir Bikram (r. 1911-50) is listed for VS 1969, 1975-1991, 1998-2003 (common era 1912-46). No date is given a premium, more likely due to lack of interest than any variation in rarity. Nepal was and is an independent nation between India and Tibet but under the strong influence of the British raj. Some coins are dated using the Saka Era (SE) and others using the Bikram Samvat Era (VS).
