Nepal VS1976 tola
This specimen was lot 3279 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$2,008 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "NEPAL, Tribhuvana, Bir Bikram, 1968-2007 VS (1911-1950 AD). Ashraphi (Tola) 1976 VS (1919 AD), NGC MS65. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar (Magnificent condition, Finest certified by NGC)." This issue of king Tribhuvana Bir Bikram (r. 1911-50) is listed for VS 1969, 1974-1991, 1998-2003 (common era 1912-46). No date is given a premium, more likely due to lack of interest than any variation in rarity. Nepal was and is an independent nation between India and Tibet but under the strong influence of the British raj. Some coins are dated using the Saka Era (SE) and others using the Bikram Samvat Era (VS).
