Naples and Sicily 1859 20 grana KM-379
This specimen was lot 2719 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 80 CHF (about US$96 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY | Naples / Sicily, Ferdinando II. 1830-1859. 20 Grana 1859, Napoli. Good extremely fine. Minor adjustment marks." The auctioneers wrongly catalogued this as an issue of Ferdinand II when it is an issue of Francis II. This type was struck 1859 only just before the unification of Italy terminated all the local coinages. The king went into exile and died in 1894, while the Naples mint continued in operation until 1866. A twenty grana was also struck for Ferdinand II in 1859 (KM 332).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4.59 g, 0.833 fine silver, 21.5 mm diameter, this specimen 4.55 g.
