Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 1039

This specimen was lot 1039 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,732 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, NAPLES et SICILE, Ferdinand II (1830-1859), AV 6 ducati, 1847. 2e type, à la tête barbue. 5017 p. frappées. Rare Fines griffes. presque Superbe. (kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Ferdinand II, 1830-59, gold six ducati of 1847, second type, bearded head. Rare, fine scratches, about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was issued 1842 and 1845-56 for Ferdinand II. It is the last issue of this denomination. The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was annexed to Italy in 1860 but remains poor, backward and corrupt.

Recorded mintage: 5,017.

Specification: 7.57 g, .996 fine gold, 21.5 mm diameter.
