Naples SB517-72507r.jpg

This was the first issue of the restored Bourbon ruler who had taken refuge in Sicily during the Napoleonic invasions. It is a two year type and is rather scarce. We are tempted to include it in our set of silver dimes of the world but it is one-twelfth of a piastra, not one tenth. The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was annexed to Italy in 1860 but remains poor, backward and corrupt. This specimen was lot 72507 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Naples & Sicily. 10 Grana, 1816. NGC MS-62. Good strike with attractive toning." The 1816 is quite a bit more available than the 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.29 g, 0.833 fine silver, .061 troy oz ASW, 18.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Gig-112, MIR-454, KM 267, Mont-538.
