Naples 1648-GAC 3 tornesi
This specimen was lot 5144 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €130 (about US$170 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, NEAPEL UND SIZILIEN, Heinrich von Lothringen, 1647-1648. Ku.-Pubblica (3 Tornesi) 1648, Neapel, geprägt nach dem Masaniello-Aufstand (Tommaso Aniello, *1623 Amalfi, Ó1647, Fischer, Obsthändler und Hauptanführer beim Aufstand in Neapel). Gekröntes Wappen der Republik//Drei Ähren und ein Olivenzweig mit einer Schleife verbunden, darüber die Signatur GA / C (Giov. Andrea Cavo), unten 9. Sehr schön. Aus der Sammlung Eberhard Link. Exemplar der Auktion Emporium 12, Hamburg 1988, Nr. 1133. (Italy, kingdom of Naples and Sicily, Henry of Lorraine, 1647-48, three tornesi of 1648, Naples mint, struck during the Masaniello rebellion. Tommaso Aniello (1623-47) was a local fisherman who almost accidentally ended up as leader of a Neapolitan rebellion against Spanish rule. The local governor, Henry of Lorraine, switched to his side and issued coins on his behalf.
