Künker Auction 425, lot 1700

This specimen was lot 1700 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,100 (about US$2,974 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"EUROPÄISCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · ITALIEN, NEAPEL UND SIZILIEN Philipp III. von Spanien, 1598-1621. 1/2 Ducato o. J. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Hübsche Patina, min. Prägeschwäche, ungewöhnlich gutes Porträt, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Italy, kingdom of Naples, Philip III of Spain, 1598-1621, undated half ducato. Rare in this condition, handsome patina, slightly weakly struck, unusually good portrait, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This rare and obscure type is listed in the SCWC for 1609, 1610 or undated, as here. It's possible the dies for this coin had a date but it didn't strike up. A half ducato was fifty grana.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 14.95 g, silver, 38 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 9, Pannuti/Riccio 4.
