Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1902

This specimen was lot 1902 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €380 (about US$555 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, NAPLES, Philippe II (1554-1598), AR mezzo ducato, s.d. D/ B. cuir. à d. A g., sigles IBR/VP. R/ Ecu couronné dans un cartouche orné. Belle patine. Très Beau. (kingdom of Naples, Philip II, 1554-98, undated silver half ducat. Obverse: armored bust right, assayer's initials below; reverse: crowned arms in an ornate cartouche. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck for Philip II of Spain, he of the Spanish Armada. The Spanish ruled Naples until the death of the last Hapsburg in 1700.
