Stephen Album sale 50, lot 583

This specimen was lot 583 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "MYSORE: Tipu Sultan, 1782-1799, AR 1/8 rupee (ja'fari), Patan, AM1221 year 11, very rare denomination; bold strike; cleaned, NGC graded AU details." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj. The Mauludi Era (AM) was a calendar invented and used only by Tipu Sultan and it lapsed after his death in battle in 1799. This type is listed for AM 1218-1226 (years 8 thru 16) along with 1/16, quarter and half rupees.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
