Steve Album Auction 55, lot 2579

This specimen was lot 2579 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MYSORE: Tipu Sultan, 1782-1799, AE paisa, Nagar, AM1221, elephant left, date to right and Persian alif for '1' above, strong strike, choice VF." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj. The Mauludi Era (AM) was a calendar invented and used only by Tipu Sultan and it lapsed after his death in battle in 1799. This paisa was struck year one only. Many mints issued these copper paisa in dozens of styles.
