Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 76040

This specimen was lot 76040 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mysore. Rupee, Year 74 (1810). Krishna Raja Wodeyar III. NGC MS-64." There is a similar half rupee (KM C206a). The accession date ("۷۴") is that of the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II, who died in 1806. Krishna Raja Wodeyar III was descended not from Tipu Sultan (d. 1799) but from the dynasty ousted by Haider Ali, the Wadiyars. He was installed as maharaja in 1799 at the age of five with British approval. He himself was set aside by the British in 1831, who ruled the kingdom directly until 1881, when the state was restored to his adopted son, Chamarajendra Wadiyar X.
