Künker sale 424, lot 503

This specimen was lot 503 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €10,000 (about US$14,160 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, BISTUM Franz von Waldeck, 1532-1553. 1/2 Taler 1535, Münster. + FRANC' * D' * G' * MONA' * Z' * OSNA' * EL' * COF' * MI' * AD' Vierfeldiges Wappen (Münster, Osnabrück / Minden, Münster) mit Mittelschild von Waldeck, oben und zu den Seiten je ein sechsstrahliger Stern//(Wappenschild von Münster) S' PETR (Wappenschild von Minden) VS* - S* PA (Wappenschild von Osnabrück) V - LVS* Die Kniebilder des Heiligen Paulus mit Schwert und Buch und des Heiligen Petrus mit Schlüssel und Buch nebeneinander v. v., im Abschnitt der Wappenschild von Waldeck zwischen der geteilten Jahreszahl * 15 - 35 *. Von größter Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit feinem Prägeglanz, winz. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 319, Osnabrück 2019, Nr. 3785. (Germany, bishopric of Münster, Francis of Waldeck, 1532-53, half thaler of 1535, Münster mint. Obverse: quartered arms of Münster, Osnabrück and Minden, with the escutcheon of Waldeck, above and to the sides a six-pointed star; reverse: (coat of arms of Münster) S' PETR (coat of arms of Minden) VS* - S* PA (coat of arms of Osnabrück) V - LVS*, the kneeling images of Saint Paul with sword and book and Saint Peter with key and book next to each other facing, in the exergue, the coat of arms of Waldeck divides the date. Extremely rare, attractive example with fine luster, slightly weakly struck, choice very fine.)"

This type was also struck in 1541. This was issued soon after the bishop recaptured the city from the Anabaptists.
