This specimen was lot 73005 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Mohur, AH 1080 Year 12 (1669). Aurangabad Mint. Aurangzeb Alamgir. NGC MS-66. This single finest certified of the date on the either the NGC or PCGS population reports. Boldly struck with great details and lustrous fields. A stellar example of the type far nicer than normally encountered from this issue worthy of a premium bid." This type is listed from over forty mints in India. The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This mohur was struck year 3-21 and 30-32 at Aurangabad, a common mint.
