CNG Lissner sale, lot 483

This specimen was lot 483 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,541. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Mughal Empire. Muhyi al-Din Muhammad Aurangzeb Alamgir. AH 1068-1118/AD 1658-1707. AV Mohur. Khujista Bunyad mint. Dually dated AH 1081 and RY 13 (21 May AD 1670-9 May AD 1671). In NGC encapsulation graded MS 67. Gem uncirculated and sharply struck. Purchased from Frank Lapa, January 1970." This type is listed from over forty mints in India. The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control.
