This specimen was lot 52328 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Mohur, AH 1077 Year 9 (1666). Surat Mint. Aurangzeb Alamgir. NGC MS-64. This beautiful near-Gem specimen glows and shimmers with a bright and wholesome luster and complete impressment of details. Escaping any signs of aggressive and unsightly handling, this wonderful piece is certain to capture many excited bidders." Aurangzeb expanded the Mughal empire in all directions and had conquered nearly all of India by the time of his death. Sixty-four mints struck mohurs for him and Surat is listed in this style for years 3-45. His successors were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in less than a century.
