Sincona sale 80, lot 2512

This specimen was lot 2512 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$959 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"INDIA | Grossmogule, Shihab-ud-din Muhammas Shah Jahan, 1037-1068 AH (1628-1658). Mohur 1054 H. (1646/1647) / Year 18, Akbarabad. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. Fassungsspuren und kleiner Bohrversuch. (Mughal Empire, Shah Jahan, AH 1037-1068, mohur of AH 1054, year 18, Akbarabad mint. Rare, Good very fine, Traces of mounting and small drill mark.)"

This type was struck years 6-28 at Akbarabad and Daulatabad. The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. The emperor Shah Jahan is today remembered for erecting the Taj Mahal for his wife.
