This specimen was lot 71509 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Rupee, AH 1054 Year 18 (1645). Surat Mint. Muhammad Shah Jahan. NGC AU-58. Exceedingly pleasing, with very little evidence of actual wear, this handsome piece offers steely gray luster and is entirely charming." The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This type was struck years 6-32 and Surat is the most common mint. There are 26 mints for this type. Shah Jahan is famous for building the Taj Mahal.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.44 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM 235.23.
