Morocco 1979 50 dirhams
This specimen was lot 3497 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Hassan II. 1962-1999 50 Dirhams 1979. Anniversary - Green March. Sehr selten, nur 70 Exemplare geprägt. FDC aus Polierter Platte. Winz. Patinaflecken. (kingdom of Morocco, Hassan II, 1962-99, fifty dirhams of 1979, on the anniversary of the Green March. Very rare, only 70 pieces struck. Proof, minor spotting.)"
Morocco, unlike the rest of the Maghreb, was never under Ottoman control or even influence, being ruled by native dynasts. It was briefly (1912-56) partitioned between France and Spain but was restored to its native dynasty after World War Two, which family still rules today. This type was minted in silver and gold 1976-80. The commemorative celebrates the Moroccan occupation of the northern portion of the former Spanish Sahara.
Recorded mintage: 3,000 in silver plus 70 in gold plus proofs.
