Misox (1487-1518) scudo d'oro Fr-328
This specimen was lot 21575 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $49,200. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND. Mesocco (Misox). Scudo d'Oro del Sole (Sonnenkronen), ND. Marquis Gian Giacomo di Trivulsio (1487-1518). NGC AU-55. Finely beaded circle encloses a shield bearing three crosses, flanking are twin I's, each with three tiny crescents, legend: 'CRISTVS VINCIT', (Christ Conquers); Reverse: Cross fleury in double circle, 'CRISTVS IMPERAT', (Christ Commands). Gian Giacomo received the coinage right from Emperor Friedrich III in 1487; after 1549 the Trivulsio lost their Swiss connections. A legendary survivor of the period, wonderfully executed for an issue of the late Medieval period, with a simplistic yet attractive design that has been boldly placed and well centered on the flan. EXTREMELY RARE with only two examples in archived auction records dating back to 2002. Ex: Leu Numismatik auction, October 2002, Lot #1497."
The marquisate of Misox or Mesocco is now in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. All its gold coinage is rare.
