Sincona sale 47, lot 3028

This specimen was lot 3028 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 42,000 CHF (about US$50,396 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND, Waadt/Vaud, Kanton, Aimo di Monfalcone, 1491-1517. Dukat o. J. Kopf des Bischofs nach recht. In der Umschrift der Name. Rv. Quadriertes Wappen. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (canton of Vaud, Aymon of Monfalcone, 1491-1517, undated ducat. Obverse: bishop's head right, name around; reverse: quartered arms. Of the highest rarity, Very fine-extremely fine.)"

This rare type, one of only two gold coins from this town, was issued by the bishop of Lausanne, not the canton of Vaud which surrounds Lausanne. The bishop of Lausanne ruled his diocese from the late thirteenth century until the 1530's when it went over to the Reformation. The Sovereign Council of Bern secularized the bishopric in 1536 and the bishop fled.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.46 g.
