The first specimen was lot 1473 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$554 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Milano Filipo III, Re di Spagna, 1598-1621. Ducatone 1608. Geharnischte Büste mit Strahlenkrone und Halskrause rechts. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen. Sehr schön. (Italy, duchy of Milan, Philip III of Spain, 1598-1621, ducatone of 1608. Obverse: armored bust with radiate crown and ruffed collar to right; reverse: crowned arms; very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 21696 in Heritage sale 3004 (New York, January 2009), where it sold for $632.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Milan. Philip III Scudo 1608, XF40 NGC. Well struck with even gray patina and light abrasions. From the Grundy Collection." The SCWC lists this type as a ducatone and mentions issues for 1602-08. The Duchy of Milan was the linchpin of Spanish possessions in Italy and jealously guarded by them until the collapse of the Spanish Hapsburgs in 1700. After the War of the Spanish Succession, it passed to the Austrians, who held it until the time of Napoleon.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver; the first specimen is 31,79 g, the second specimen 31.95 g.
