Milan 1602 ducatone Dav-3997
This specimen was lot 1376 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,304 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Mailand, Filippo III. 1598-1621. Ducatone 1602, Milano. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Schöne Tönung und gut ausgeprägt. (Italy, duchy of Milan, Philip III, 1598-1621, ducatone of 1602, Milan mint. Very rare, Good very fine, Nice toning and well struck.)"
The SCWC lists this type as a ducatone and mentions issues for 1602-08. The Duchy of Milan was the linchpin of Spanish possessions in Italy and jealously guarded by them until the collapse of the Spanish Hapsburgs in 1700. After the War of the Spanish Succession, it passed to the Austrians, who held it until the time of Napoleon.
