This specimen was lot 73630 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Pesos, 1988. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-67. KM-532. Nationalization of Oil Industry - 50th Anniversary. Satiny overall with an energetic cartwheel luster."The mint issued several commemoratives for the fiftieth anniversary of the nationalization of the oil industry but the 5,000 pesos was the only one that circulated, being made from copper-nickel. Standard Oil screamed when President Cardenas seized its properties in 1938 and threatened to send in the U.S. Marines. When President Roosevelt refused to go along with Standard Oil's protests, Mexican sovereignty was finally affirmed.
