Mexico 1823Mo 4 escudos rev Eliasberg 3253.jpg

This specimen was lot 3253 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $3,795. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1823 JM 4 escudos. Mexico City mint. Types as above. Medium gold with deeper highlights at the rims, some scattered, tiny pits on Augustine's bust, similar pits at center of reverse, also planchet adjustment marks run diagonally across the reverse eagle. The areas of striking weakness and adjustment marks on the reverse are typical for this very rare one year type. Lacking from many superb collections of Mexican coins and more elusive than the Iturbide 8 escudos. Interestingly, the pieces in the 1975 ANA Sale and the Norweb collection sold for almost the exact same price -- $2,300 and $2,310 -- despite being sold nearly a decade apart. Their grades were similar, the Norweb piece called 'good very fine' in the 1985 Christie's Dallas sale and the 1975 ANA specimen called 'very fine.' Perhaps from J.C. Morgenthau and Co. (Wayte Raymond)'s sale of the Waldo C. Newcomer Collection, February 1935, Lot 421, not plated but described as 'Fine and rare;' John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.875 fine gold. This specimen: 13.46 grams, 30.20 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 382.1, Fr-61.
