Mexico 1759-Mo MM 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 4118 in Goldberg sale 74 (Los Angeles, June 2013), where it sold for $4,140 including buyer's fees. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. 8 Escudos, 1759-Mo MM. Ferdinand VI, 1746-1759. Third bust type, low relief. Draped and cuirassed bust of Ferdinand VI right. Reverse: Small crowned Bourbon arms within chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Lovely lustrous orange toned example. NGC graded AU-53." This specimen is one of a series (called the "medium bust") struck 1757-59 towards the end of the reign of Ferdinand VI (1746-59). All eight escudos of this king are rare and expensive. The reverse motto, "NOMINA MAGNA SEQUOR," is Latin for "I follow a great name [Philip V]." This coin was legal tender in the United States, where it was known as a doubloon, and would have traded for $15.50.
