Mexico 1757-Mo MM 8 escudos
This specimen is one of a series (called the "medium bust") struck 1757-59 towards the end of the reign of Ferdinand VI (1746-59). All 8 escudos of this king are rare and expensive. The reverse motto, "NOMINA MAGNA SEQUOR," is Latin for "I follow a great name [Philip V]."
This specimen was lot 3134 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $6900. The catalog description[1] noted, "1757 MM 8 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-55 (NGC). Small low relief bust of Fernando VI to right, legends around, date below/crowned arms, garter around, legends around. Medium yellow gold with rich toning in the peripheral regions and good lustre on the reverse. Natural and very attractive in appearance, a good example of the first use of this bust type. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
