Mexico 1756-Mo MM 8 escudos

Shown is an 1756MoMM "large bust" eight escudos, one of a type struck 1752-56 during the reigh of Ferdinand VI. All eight escudos of this king are rare and expensive. The reverse motto, "NOMINA MAGNA SEQUOR," is Latin for "I follow a great name [Philip V]." This coin was legal tender in the United States, where it was known as a doubloon, and would have traded for $15.50. This specimen was lot 40259 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1756-MM. NGC EF-40. Ferdinand VI (1746-60)."
